The Gift of Giving

The Gift of Giving

Posted On: December 8, 2014

In this season of giving, there are an overwhelming number of messages about shopping and sales and gifts. And, just when I felt like we’ve gone so far down the commercialization path that the entire world has forgotten the true meaning of the holidays, I had a moment with my three year old that restored my hope.

The story starts with Sheila, our caregiver and one of the most special women to walk this earth. She is smart, warm, kind and loves our daughter, Olivia, almost as much as we do. She has a 10-year-old son whom my daughter believes, with all of her heart, is her brother (so much so that when she meets new people, she introduces her “brother” Brian before introducing herself.)

So, during our recent family vacation to Disney, it was only natural to go find some gifts for Sheila and Brian. Even during our few days away, we missed them both terribly and had wished they were there with us – they are such a big part of our family that it felt odd to be at Disney without them.

We returned home and on Monday, the first day back to our normal life, Sheila picked Olivia up at school and took her to the library, something they do at least once or twice a week. But rather than enjoying her library time, Olivia became restless and let Sheila know that she needed to go home. Immediately. Why? Because she wanted to give her gift to Sheila that very instant.

And in that moment, I realized that my daughter understands the most important part of gift giving. The giving.

She is a warm and delicious child. My husband and I are very lucky and I’m so thankful to my girl for reminding me of the beauty inside in each gift we wrap this holiday season.
