Grateful for Past, Present and Future

Grateful for Past, Present and Future

Last month, I had the good fortune to attend my high school reunion. It had been many years since I had seen my classmates. Truth be told, I felt so far-removed from my high school self that it’s almost as if those years were not my own. But, with the hope of seeing people I have recently reconnected with (thank you Facebook!), I made the decision to attend.

And while I wasn’t nervous about going, I wasn’t really sure what to expect.

Which is great because the night was wonderful – an unexpected delight. It reconnected me with my past self. The 17-year-old me whose biggest worry was a mid-term exam. Who counted her friends as her most precious possessions. Who laughed often and cried just as much. There was uncertainty about my future, but it was a far more exciting and optimistic uncertainty than you get as an adult.

And it reconnected me with those friends who carried me through adolescence and helped me pave the way for the adult I eventually became. The ease with which we were able to pick up and find common hopes and dreams for our own adult futures was amazing to me.

So on this Thanksgiving, I am doing much more than reflecting on what I am grateful for in my life today. I am sending out thanks to my past, present and future self. And for all the special individuals who have been a part of my personal journey. I hope you can take the time to do the same.

And, I would be remiss if I did not send out an extra special thank you to the industrious individuals who spend so much time planning our reunion and giving me a gift that I will always hold close – thank you!
